<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>'I'm very excited about the new EP. I already have a favourite song.'</i> - <b>Tom Ravenscroft, 6 Music, 2012</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>'Bouncing between the silken quality of a high order pianist and a woman influenced into a murderous rage' </i>- <b>DrunkenWerewolf, 2012</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>'Anna Lena and her Orchids have managed to craft their very own brand of dark, atmospheric indie-pop, which is somewhere between The National and St. Vincent. ‘View of My Sanity’ perfectly exemplifies the fragility and beauty of frontwoman Anna Lena and the power of a simple heartfelt pop song.' </i>- <b>The 405, 2012</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>'She’s someone I’ve had my beady eye on for a while… I’m kind of in love with this… its gorgeous.'</i> - Ruth Barnes, The Other Woman,<b> Amazing Radio, 2012</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anna Lena’s haunting vocals have been described by UK press as <b>‘beautifully unique’ </b>and <b>‘ethereal’ </b>with her lyrics showing experience beyond her years. After touring the UK, Anna Lena and The Orchids have just finished a highly successful tour in Norway. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The band draws influences from <b>St.Vincent, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Bjork </b>and<b> Ane Brun</b>. Whilst similarities can be observed between The Orchids and the above acts, the bands mixture of Scandinavian folk, alternative rock and ambient musical styles, create a uniquely dark and beautiful sound.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Their new EP features <b>‘View Of My Sanity’</b>, the single that turned the heads of fans and critics alike in October 2012, exciting the likes of Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6 Music), The 405, Amazing Radio, P3 (Norway’s biggest music station) and many more. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The music industry are excited by this EP release and so they should be.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Hella Better Dancer are a female fronted London/Brighton based 4 piece who play spacey indie rock with ambient melodies and gnarly distorted guitars.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Following their debut EP Please Stay Here, Hella Better Dancer has returned with fiery guitars, concrete dance-drums and nu-folk sensibility on Swimming. Described by <b>Lauren Laverne as a "young PJ Harvey,"</b> HBD’s intelligent, brooding and emphatic songs are attracting an ever-growing fanbase. HBD were accepted to BBC Introducing’s Musicians Masterclass which supports unsigned, undiscovered music headed by key industry people <b>(Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens).</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They've released two EPs through independent record label Roundhouse Records and received both national and American radio play, most notably on BBC Radio 6 and KEXP.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They've played at venues such as<b> Rough Trade East, The Roundhouse, Birthdays,</b> and <b>The Lock Tavern</b> and at events such as <b>The Big Chill, Leefest, Underage Festival, Turning Point Festival </b>and most recently at<b> the London Paralympic Games.</b></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sarah Johns Music Party is fronted by singer, songwriter, percussionist and guitarist Sarah Johns. With an entrancing voice and an honest and avant-garde approach to song writing, she carves her own unique path between the worlds of anti-folk and blues music.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Compared to the likes of <b>Tune-Yards, Lykke Li </b>and<b> Camille</b> for her raw and experimental approach to sound, unusual vocal arrangements and theatrical performances, Sarah’s voice is soulful, sweet, yet enigmatic. She is accompanied by ritualistic drums and utilises a loop pedal to layer her wide-ranging vocals and creative percussion.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Whilst inspired by blues and soul, Sarah’s sound is stripped back, pure and tribal – utilising the minimum of sounds and making the most of space to create the effect she wants – ‘a hypnotic and all-encompassing’ experience for the audience.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the last year Sarah Johns has supported the likes of <b>Mariee Sioux, Kate Tempest, Melodica, Melody and Me, Maia, Wolf Alice </b>and <b>Liam Bailey</b>. This year she will be releasing her debut EP 'Blossom Tree' (Psychic Healing Network Records.)</div>

<b><u>Nick Edward Harris </u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Nick Edward Harris is a progressive acoustic guitar player, singer and songwriter. Inspired by musicians such as Andy McKee, John Smith, Jack Rose and Tommy Emmanuel, he combines delicate finger-picking and percussive guitar playing with distinctive lyrical storytelling.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Having recorded an E.P. in 2010 with <b>Ben Lovett (Communion Records, Mumford and Sons) </b>he has now finished his debut album 'Chimera' which featureS unique collaborations with <b>Emma Gatrill (Sons of Noel and Adrian, Laish and Mariners Children)</b>, <b>Ted Dwane (Mumford and Sons) </b>and <b>Ash GardNer (Emperor Yes)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In September 2011, Nick moved from London to the remote parts of New Zealand's south island to prepare the material for This debut album. He spent six months intensely writing and practicing, taking inspiration from his experiences on the road, busking on the streets and the country's dramatic and isolating surroundings. By February he was ready to go into the studio.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
With the help of writer, producer and friend Nick Trepka, 'Chimera' was recorded over a few long Winter nights in the basement of an old Victorian dog biscuit factory in East London, House of Strange, which has been home to the likes of <b>Mumford and Sons, Ash, Noah and the Whale, and Emmy the Great. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The songs were recorded simply and naturally, to sound as they do when played live, featuring intricate harp accompaniment with cello and double bass. Chimera features eleven magnetic and unique songs written about love, squirrels, the devil and traveling.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He then spent the summer playing UK festivals, mastering the album and this Autumn has been supporting the sci-fi pop folk band <b>Maia </b>on their UK Tour. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This December 15th he officially releases ‘Chimera’ and celebrates at The Gallery Café, Bethnal Green, with support from Emma Gatrill and Hannah Miller (of the Moulettes). </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just releasing her debut album ‘Chapter One’, Emma Gatrill combines intricate harp playing with powerful vocals that soar above her classic songwriting, oweing a debt to<b> Bjork </b>and<b> Joni Mitchell </b>as well as her friends and co-conspirators <b>Rachael Dadd </b>and<b> Alessi’s Ark.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
An unstoppable and multi-instrumental collaborator, Emma is also a full time musician with the multi-tentacled psych-folk behemoth <b>Sons of Noel and Adrian </b>and <b>The Mariner’s Children</b> as well as lending her voice, clarinet or accordion skills to everyone from <b>Laura Marling, Willy Mason </b>and<b> to Broken Social Scene.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The excitement and reviews surrounding that of Woodpecker Wooliams and her freshly released album ‘The Bird School of Being Human’ and with her new single ‘Sparrow’ receiving daily plays and praise form 6Music DJs, makes one feel that WW doesn’t even need an introduction - she is simply, nothing like you have ever heard before. So who is she?</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Woodpecker Wooliams is a resident of Brighton, a keeper of bees, all round naturophile and lover of Russian Dolls. Originally comprised of vocals and harp, the odd bell, chime and whistle, she now encompasses an altogether fuller, electronic, droney sound. With an unnerving sweet tremolo voice (comparable to Joanna Newsom), live she is bold and fearless and delivers an alluring, understatedly dramatic set.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Delving into beautiful and mesmerising folk she then found herself moving towards exploring “mental, horrible, distorted noise”, in an almost compulsive effort to bring some balance to her music. As a result she has now created something genuinely unique and awe inspiring.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><i>"....exquisite melancholy song writing in the finest traditions of mildly psychedelic, quintessentially English, stoner folk.” </i>- The Sunday Telegraph</i></div>
<i>
</i>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<i></i><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><i>“With his breathy Ian McCulloch-style croon…a burnished psychedelia creeps into the mix and takes this music to the skies.”</i> – Uncut</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<i></i><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><i>"one of those rare finds... its lo-fi intensity is reminiscent of one the greatest records of the '70s singer songwriter genre, Nick Drake's 'Five Leaves Left'.</i> – God is in the Tv </i></div>
<i>
</i>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Jack Cheshire combines sweetly-slurred melodies, kaleidoscopic finger-picking and intricately-layered musicbox psychedelia with shuffling drums, double bass, celestial harmonies and an uncompromising sound and vision that sweep from micro to macro, from introspection to constellation. The results have invited comparisons with Syd Barratt's, Arthur Lee, Radiohead and Beck, and led to supports with the likes of Josh T Pearson, Roddy Woomble, Polly Paulusma and Kris Dreve</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
Abi Wade, the Brighton-based cellist/percussionist who has been compared to the esteemed likes of Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor, will release her new AA single 'Heavy Heart' / 'Faker' on 5th November. She was recently handpicked by Patrick Wolf to accompany him as support on his tour of the UK and Europe (full dates below), has played shows with Jesca Hoop and O Emperor, and stunned audiences with an appearance at End Of The Road festival.<br />
<br />
Abi Wade (cello.box.voice): a musical collaboration between limbs, strings and vocal chords. Her music is seamlessly sewn together, each beat, melody and bass line exactly in its place, to create songs that pull the heart strings and a performance that will beguile and intrigue. The cello, uniquely utilised, was the backbone to the four songs that comprise her 'And Blood And Air EP' – a set that strikes the listener with a singular blow, soft but undeniably affecting. Carved with a uniquely tailored blade, it is hard to liken her to any former artist, but similarities have been drawn to the independently distinct Arthur Russell, Joanna Newsom and Kate Bush. New single, the double A-side 'Heavy Heart' / 'Faker' is an incredible leap forward, revealing a beating pop heart beneath the inventive yet minimalist arrangements.<br />

<b>Folie a Deux & </b><a href="http://www.robotelephantrecords.co.uk/"><b>Robot Elephant Record</b>s</a> are very excited to announce the album launch of Brighton's<b> <a href="http://www.woodpeckerwooliams.com/">Woodpecker Wooliams </a>at the <a href="http://www.vortexjazz.co.uk/">Vortex</a> </b>in Dalston on 7th September. A resident of Brighton, a keeper of bees, all round naturophile and lover of Russian Dolls <b>Woodpecker Wooliams aka Gemma Williams</b> originally comprised of vocals and harp, the odd bell, chime and whistle has now more recently begun to encompass an altogether fuller, electronic, droney sound. With an unnerving sweet tremolo voice comparable to Joanna Newsom, live she is bold and fearless and delivers an alluring, understatedly dramatic set.<br />
<br />
Her new single 'Sparrow' is currently getting daily plays on<b> 6Music</b> including from <b>Steve Lamaq </b>and <b>Tom Raventscroft</b>, you can check out the video premiered on <a href="http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/videos/music-videos/woodpecker-wooliams-sparrow-best-fit-premiere-102248"><b>The Line of Best Fit</b> here</a>. <br />
What an extroadinary life Gemma has had! From being initiated onto a Shamanistic path when she was 20 years old, to delivering babies as an auxiliary maternity nurse, to living in Devon after recovering from a severe illness. It is these life experiences that led to the creation of Woodpecker Wooliams. Delving into beautiful and mesmerising folk she then found herself moving towards exploring “mental, horrible, distorted noise”, in an almost compulsive effort to bring some balance to her music. As a result she has now created something genuinely unique and awe inspiring.<br />
<br />
Robot Elephant Records - an electronic label - will be releasing her debut album 'The Bird School of Being Human' on the 10th of September.<br />

Wolf Alice, recently headlining Communion, are a 4-piece band who mix electronic music with folk - simple, stripped down lo-fi instrumentation - accompanied by beautifully pure vocals from lead singer Ellie Roswell. The band have been around for a while but it is with their latest EP 'Wolf Alice' that they have really focused their eclectic sound.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Geese are like the remixes they've produced for Hot Chip, Jon Hopkins, James Yorkston and David Homes, constructed entirely from the sounds of cellos, violas, violins and drums. A huge epic sound live they supported Mariners Children and Rozi Plain last January and totally blew us away. 'The music can alternately sound as though you're looking out from on high and observing miles of beautiful wilderness… For its quality and uniqueness, and full gamut of emotions, Geese is something to hear.'</div>

With an entrancing voice and an honest and avant-garde approach to song writing, she carves her own unique path between the worlds of anti-folk and blues music.</span></span><br />

She is accompanied by ritualistic drums and harmonising back-up singers including artist Milly Blue - reminiscent of early gospel, with a far more edgy twist. </span></span><br />

When playing solo Sarah utilises a loop pedal layering her wide-ranging vocals and creative percussion.</span></span><br />

<a name='more'></a><span style="color: white;"><span style="color: black;"><span style="color: black;"><br />Giulia Ricci - shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize (2010 and 2011), selected for Creekside Open 2011 by Dexter Dalwood as well as the Royal Academy Summer Show 2011 - is fascinated by patterns and their systems which she explores through various repetitive processes, primarily drawing on paper. She is interested in various aspects of science and mathematics such as chaos theory, but her work is also intimately bound up with, and born of, her experiences, background and cultural reference points. These include not only the famous mosaics of her home town Ravenna, but also the rural patchwork of the fields in the countryside of Emilia-Romagna in Italy where she grew up - what she calls the 'man-made geometry of the landscape'. Her work employs subtly shifting geometric patterns that evoke ideas of organic growth and change, and the relationship between these processes and the eminently human need for control. Whilst perfectly flat, her detailed, immacutely rendered grids often simultaneously suggest the idea of extrusions, swellings and bulges, conveying the illusions of three-dimensions.</span></span></span><br />

<a name='more'></a><span style="font-size: 85%;"><br /></span><a href="http://onyamccausland.blogspot.com/">Onya McCausland </a>is currently Honorary Research Assistant in Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, and in 2011 was shortlisted for the Royal Academy’s Wollaston Award. Onya works directly with elements taken from the landscape - chalk, mine water and pigments derived from copper and mineral deposits extracted from specific sites. She does not seek to reproduce the landscapes with which she engages, but rather to make them tangibly present by bringing them physically into her works. These, too, frequently occupy an ambiguous position in relation to their two-dimensional character – some resting against the wall, others ‘escaping’ from the confines of the support out onto the walls of the gallery and into the real world. The heightened sensitivity she has to mankind’s relationship with natural materials is clear – as Charles Darwent (The Independent) states, her work is ‘deeply human’.<br />

<span style="font-size: 85%;"></span><a href="http://www.tomhackney.com/">Tom Hackney's</a> geometrically abstract paintings convey the essence and feeling of his subjects rather than a literal representation, guiding the viewer to the works content through their titles. In <i>New New York, </i>for example, the dramatic arrangement of vertical horizontal lines as well as bright electric colours instantly communicate the dynamism, vibrancy and towering skyscrapers that encapsulate the New York landscape, one comparable to Piet Mondrian's <i>Broadway Boogie Woogie. </i>Yet like Naomi Doran (see below), Tom's work also contains a tension and ambiguity between their painterly and sculptural qualities. In certain pieces, built-up sections of plaster endow his canvases with a multi-layered quality, at other times the paint wriggles onto the frame, and again in <i>New York York - </i>the resolutely two-dimensional technique employed creates a dizzying and disorientating sensation of spatial depth. Whilst Tom's works represent the fundamental essense of his subjects, they also emphasise the status of paintings as something distinct and separate from nature, in accordance with the Modernist insistence that 'a picture - before being a war horse or a nude woman or some little genre scene - is essentially a flat surface covered with colours arranged in a certain order.'<br />

<br />
Naomi Doran is a North London based artist who challenges the limitations of the two-dimensional either by puncturing the surfaces of her works to reveal a seemingly infinite void beyond, or by incorporating sculptural elements that project outwards into space. Like Giulia Ricci's work (also in the shop) her pieces aim to establish a certain sense of equilibrium or harmony between the man-made and the natural, the artifical and the organic. In her reliefs, concrete, iron and streel are not employed to create a gleaming vision of the future; rather, they highlight the processes of decay and erosionm rusting and cracking. Her exploration of these materials make us consider their place in the landscape anew; in doing so, our industrial heritage is revealed not as a blight on the landscape, but rather an intrinsic part of it - and one that now contains its own elegiac, poetic beauty.<br />

She is interested in many different principles and aspects of science and mathematics, such as chaos theory and the correspondence between macro and micro patterns existing in the universe, yet her work is also intimately bound up with her personal background, experiences and cultural reference points. These include not only the famous mosaics of her home town of Ravenna, but also the rural patchwork of fields in the countryside of Emilia-Romagna in Italy where she grew up – what she calls ‘the man-made geometry of the landscape’. This tension between natural ‘disorder’ and the eminently human need to impose structure is at the very heart of Ricci’s practice. Her main influences include the artists </span><strong style="line-height: 17px; font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><a href="http://www.gagosian.com/artists/alighiero-e-boetti/">Alighiero Boetti</a>, <a href="http://www.albersfoundation.org/Albers.php?inc=Galleries&i=A_1">Annie Albers </a></span></strong><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">and </span><strong style="line-height: 17px; font-weight: bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><a href="http://studiocleo.com/gallerie/martin/martin.html">Agnes Martin</a>.

It started with her film Beads (order, disorder, symmetry) that shows Ricci's hands playing with two circular sets of tactile beads - one black and one white - in which slowly and rhythmically she creates patterns and disruptions with her finger tips. This subsequently led onto a series of drawings using ink pens and grids to experiment with the order and disorder of patterns using only triangular forms.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 16.0px Tahoma; color: #292929; min-height: 19.0px">

Ricci has deliberately chosen the layout of the show to be sympathetic to the space in which it is housed – a Victorian domestic house converted into a modern yet intimate ‘white cube’ gallery.</p> <p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 16.0px Tahoma; color: #292929">An eagerly-anticipated solo exhibition, Order / Disruption encapsulates a body of work in Ricci's practice that has been marked by great success and recognition over the past two years, with exhibitions, publications and awards both in the UK and internationally. Every note on the record is there because it should be there, everything is allowed to breathe and be natural' (Plenty Side), in other words 'unhurried, understated and ace' (<strong>Plan B).</strong> Rozi's bew single 'Humans' is now on sale on Need No Water Records and her second album is soon to follow.</div><br /><div>New Single 'Humans' - <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAMKhomQFtu">www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAMKhomQFtu</a></div><div><strong><br /></strong></div><div><strong>Mouth 4 Rusty<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSdyAeXdzJFXAq-0D0_h0KyfxdYz5GWA0aSy1kbroKd8rGp3skPnnQDJCNpj14V-wclIJD8eYG1MyfbiOIkkmqQfEk0p0gt8LEavdtPhZAAp-HUUQ56HB7Gmjvvf6EzJ4lGO_reTnhqHA/s1600/Mouth4Rusty.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 122px; CURSOR: pointer" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611063264629554674" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSdyAeXdzJFXAq-0D0_h0KyfxdYz5GWA0aSy1kbroKd8rGp3skPnnQDJCNpj14V-wclIJD8eYG1MyfbiOIkkmqQfEk0p0gt8LEavdtPhZAAp-HUUQ56HB7Gmjvvf6EzJ4lGO_reTnhqHA/s320/Mouth4Rusty.jpg" /></a></strong></div><br /><div>'Elegantly crafted hummable songs that you won't want to miss out on' - <strong>Rough Trade</strong></div><br /><div>'That has got to be the most beautiful song I have ever heard about qutting smoking' - <strong>Patrick Lyons, Resonance 104.4FM</strong></div><br /><div><strong></strong></div><div>'Mouth 4 Rusty had the audience clicking and clapping along to stripped back simple songs of love forlorn' - <strong>Amelia's Magazine</strong></div><br /><div><strong></strong></div><div>Mouth 4 Rusty began writing and recording simple songs in a small hand-made wooden room in late winter 2009, writing them in about an hour and recording them in around three, so as to preserve the moment they were written. Joined by a second pair of lungs, they began playing live in August, first as a duo, then a trio, with percussion played with their feet. Since self-releasing their first EP, 'Time Over Money' in March 2010 as a quartet, the group has spent their time since finding their favourite venues in London and Oslo, and gradually blossoming into a six-piece of violin, cello, double bass, percussion, guitar, melodica and two voices. Mouth 4 Rusty's intention is to make simple, traditionally-inspired songs that people can relate to, hummable music based on life as it unfolds, as early folk music was. Audience participation is encouraged. They find their happiest times together in a small dark intimate settings - practicing, recording and playing live.</div><br /><div>'Good Men Now' - <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaTswHX1bA">http://www.blogger.com/www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaTswHX1bA</a> </div><br />BUY TICKETS HERE: <a href="http://www.wegottickets.com/event/118655">www.wegottickets.com/event/118655</a><br /><br /><div>In other news! Together they juxtapose cut-glass vocals and dark story telling against a shifting backdrop of strings, guitar and bass. Her songs tell stories, some true (as in her song 'Strongmen and Acrobats' about taking her autistic brother to the fireworks), some far-fetched ('Talented Tailor') is an immorality tale about the perils of sleeping with a tattooist) but all full of a dry wit which picks at the stitches of anxiety and the female body - '<i>Like biting into a cream cake, and finding a razor blade'</i> (<b>The Windmill</b>). After three years of refining her craft, Hocking is realising her first double A-side on 7 inch vinyl including a bonus CD with four tracks <i>'Brilliantly hummable melodies and masterly storytelling with sweet harmonies belying often brutal lyrics. We can't recommend it enough' </i>(<b>For Folks Sake</b>). Tristram, Laish and Kristin McClement sounded the best I think I've ever heard them. Laish were outstanding playing songs from their latest album to perfection, as well as brand new songs showing off Daniel Green's warbling vocals and the girls harmonies to the fullest. And last but not least Tristram... wow... they have developed a new sound that has taken on an epic intensity combining imaginative, sensitive lyrics, Tristram's whispy voice and an incredible layering of guitar, cello, drums and base with songs ending in intense abstract sound loops that take you off to a place not dissimilar to the way you feel when listening to Pink Floyd trippiness. Perhaps not the best comparison, but their new style certainly can not be restricted to the definition of 'folk' anymore, it is without doubt of another exciting making. A particular mention I think also has to made is to Tom Heathers (the drummer for every single act last night!) who is possibly the best and most exciting drummer to watch around!!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF_Y3SrWGK_bHZUZL5KryJUencIHo8a_RCCb8gkl4Suj3HhOhfLagDJvmJT609cGJDNhrmXgt4lNZabikyEsZNSt8hsdUOdFuQyT96ZUj-Kr-xu8MsrS9uT15bmOUr_HMjPASuGYH8duA/s1600/IMG_9562+bw.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 214px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578518126048952594" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjF_Y3SrWGK_bHZUZL5KryJUencIHo8a_RCCb8gkl4Suj3HhOhfLagDJvmJT609cGJDNhrmXgt4lNZabikyEsZNSt8hsdUOdFuQyT96ZUj-Kr-xu8MsrS9uT15bmOUr_HMjPASuGYH8duA/s320/IMG_9562+bw.jpg" /></a>With a genuinely eager, friendly and enthusiastic audience, the mulled wine, beer and ginger-beer and rum flowed all night, with the art gallery next door open for all to see Philippa Johnsons beautiful art installation in Utrophia's gallery. The first gig of 2011 begins <a href="http://www.utrophia.net/events/AltFolk2">26 February from 19.00 - 23.00 </a>with performances by some of the most exciting and experimental folk bands around: <a href="http://www.myspace.com/laishmusic">Laish</a> (<a href="http://www.willkommenrecords.co.uk/">Willkommen Collective</a>), <a href="http://www.myspace.com/tristramsongs">Tristram</a> (<a href="http://www.brokensoundmusic.com/index.htm">Broken Sounds</a>) and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/kristinmcclement">Kristin McClement </a>(<a href="http://www.willkommenrecords.co.uk/">Willkommen Collective</a>). Once again the night will be a joyous evening with mulled wine, cider and beer! To read more about these exciting bands please see below.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.myspace.com/tristramsongs">Tristram</a> are a four-piece London-based band comprising members from Peggy Sue and the Mariner's Children led by Tristram Bawtree. Whilst rooted in folk their sound incorporates more powerful and complex instrumentation inspired by their love of post rock and post punk bands such as Silver Mt Zion/Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Joy Division. Think the vocal tone of Nick Drake, with lyrics that take a side ways appoach to universal themes, underpinned by dramatic bursts of experimental arrangement incorporating guitar, cello, base, drums and harmonium. In Autumn 2010 Tristram released their EP <a href="http://www.brokensoundmusic.com/tristram.htm">'Acci</a><a href="http://www.brokensoundmusic.com/tristram.htm">dents and Artifices'</a> on <a href="http://www.brokensoundmusic.com/index.htm">Broken Sound </a>(Forest Fire, Peggy Sue and Rachael Dadd) receiving love from Pitchfork and a rave review in the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/oct/20/new-band-tristram">Guardian's Band of the Day</a> 'as good as anything we've heard this year'. Tristram are a rare kind in that possess a sense of old world drama and romance yet can speak to the contemporary world - a hypnotic mixture of the familiar and the unexpected 'buoyed by a rare grace' (Clash) - not to be missed. Green's lyrics - letters to friends and lovers or stories about imagined characters - are reflections of moments in time, refreshingly 'honest and soulful' (NME), melancholic, </div>inspiring, humorous and reassuring ('Some how it will all be okay' - <i>Speak the Mantra) </i>Laish have recently released their<br />self-titled debut album demonstrating 'pure musicianship most could only hope to accomplish' (<a href="http://www.thebluewalrus.com/2010/11/07/album-laish-laish/">Blue Walrus</a>). 2010 saw them tour the UK and Europe, as well as support Grizzly Bear and Beach House at the Round House. This February they hit the road again for a joint-headline tour of the UK with Tristram. Utrophia is their only London stop. Kristin in an enchanting wanderer with a nylon guitar at the heart of her songs, who sings of folklore and the curiosities of a wild and yearning world, accompanied by soaring cello and eclectic percussion. Her soft and spellbinding voice has been perfectly described as the 'aural equivalent of one of these remarkable slow motion films of a bird in flight.' Inspired by poetry (Dylan Thomas and Ted Hughes) as well as visual artists (Edvard Munch and Dan Eldon's journals) can perhaps explain why her lyrics are so emotionally and visually sensitive, beautiful, dramatic and mysterious, transporting the listeners minds and imaginations to new heights. Kristin has supported the likes of Alessi's Ark (<a href="http://www.alessisark.com/kristin-mcclement/2010/03">'Her music is something so special'</a>) and various bands from the Willkommen Collective including Sons of Noel and Adrian, The Leisure Society and Pete Roe. Three weeks, three sales and 186 visitors later, it was everything we dreamed it would be – and more. Although we felt a tinge of sadness taking the works down, the overriding emotion was one of satisfaction in a job well done – and a huge sense of excitement about our future dreams and projects…</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in making the exhibition possible: all of the artists and performers, everyone at Utrophia, everybody who came along to see the show, Zannah and Madeleine for their sterling service invigilating in near-Arctic conditions, Jane for social media guidance… we simply couldn’t have done it without your support and enthusiasm.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">For now, we are taking a short breather, but we will be back soon with news of an exciting project that we hope you will all want to get involved with – so keep an eye on this blog, befriend us on Facebook if you haven’t already done so, and sign up to follow us on Twitter (FaDgallery).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />
See you soon for more adventures.</span><br />

Ricci is fascinated by patterns and their systems which she explores through various repetitive processes, primarily drawing on paper. She is also interested in various aspects of science and mathematics such as chaos theory, but her work is also intimately bound up with, and born of her experiences, background and cultural reference points. These include not only the famous mosaics of her home town of Ravenna, but also the rural patchwork of fields in the countryside of Emilia-Romagna where she grew up - what she calls the 'man-made geometry of the landscape'.</span></div><br />

Lyon's cameraless photographs come from two series where she takes plant and flower specimens as her subject matter. Her series <em>A</em> <em>Different Nature </em>comprises images of plant components that have been deliberately deconstructed, recombined and further transformed using inks and dyes. Creating hybirds that are unnatural and botanically flawed, they raise questions about contemporary society's relationship with the natural world and the increasing genetic modification of plant species.</span><br />
